Rio de Janeiro Money

The Brazilian Real (BRL)

The Brazilian real is the currency used in Brazil. With the present weakness of the dollar approximately 1.8 reals can be purchased for a U.S. dollar. Not long ago more reals could be obtained by the then stronger dollar. Both the coins and paper money come in a wide variety of colors making it easier to determine the various denominations.

Cash, Credit Cards and Traveler’s Checks

It is not wise to carry large amounts of money around Brazil and Rio de Janeiro. If you have to carry cash make sure they are denominated in dollars or Euros. These two are the most readily accepted and exchanged without much of a problem. Wear a money belt and keep excess cash in the hotel safe.

Like everywhere else credit cards are as good as cash, keeping in mind when you get the bill back home there will be a conversion of reals to dollars. If the dollar has fallen in the interim, you will have a greater amount on your charge card. Should the dollar rise you will have purchased the items for less.

Few places will take your traveler’s checks so leave them home or take a few for an emergency. Keep away from ATM’s, there is a criminal element that preys on people at these machines.

Exchanging Currency in Rio de Janeiro

Banks and hotels are the places to exchange your currency. Trying this on the street with vendors could be costly. Do not take the chance for the extra real or two. Remember to only exchange your dollars when needed. If you turn too many dollars into reals you will lose to much in the ’spread’ (the commission for those who exchange currencies), when you again have to change the reals back into dollars. The reals will not do you much good when you return home.

General Money Matters

Keep enough reals for tips. When you eat out a 10% tip will already be included in your bill. If the service is good 1 or 2 reals in tips will be a nice gesture. The same amount can be given to hotel personnel. You may tip in taxis also. Make sure the hotel gets the taxi for you if possible, to make sure you are in a real taxi.
