Rio de Janeiro Shopping

Shopping may not be the first thing that comes to mind when considering a vacation in Rio but there are plenty of shopping opportunities available. Rio de Janeiro has a variety of malls, open-air markets and many fine boutiques. Summer clothing made of natural fibers as well as leather goods and of course, swimwear are items that can be purchased in Rio. Other good buys are coffee and works of art.

Botafogo Shopping: Rio de Janeiro’s First Mall

Botafogo is home to two large shopping areas. The Rio Sul was the first mall in Rio and remains a very popular shopping center. Many small shops are located here, making this area a convenient stop for shopping. Another shopping option in Botafogo is Botafogo Praia Shopping, where shoppers can find a variety of interesting places to shop. The area has many smaller shops offering clothing, crafts and other items.

Feira Hippie in Ipanema

A trip to the Feira Hippie in Ipanema is worth your time. The Feira Hippie has been in operation every Sunday since 1968. The open-air market has about 700 stalls, carrying everything from hand made crafts to souvenir tee shirts. Ipanema shopping has many shops offering fine jewelry and other items. The Brazilian bikini is an essential part of beach attire for vacationers. Bum Bum in Ipanema is a good place to shop for swimwear.

If you cannot find a bikini that suits you at Bum Bum there are other surf shops in Rio. In Arpoador, there is a mall called Galeria River that focuses on beachwear. For the male shopper, many of these stores also carry Sungas or Speedos.

Open Air Flea Markets in Copacabana

Copacabana has several flea markets, like the Feira Hippie. In the evening and on weekends, the median of Avenida Atlantica is home to artisans who spread out their goods. Here you can find a hammock, paintings and handicrafts of all kinds. Feirarte, like Feira Hippie, is an open-air market that is open on the weekends.

Lojas Americanas: Department Stores in Rio de Janeiro

Centro is the location of Lojas Americanas, Rios largest chain department store. Like all department stores, there is a wide variety of merchandise including casual clothing, toys and sporting goods. Also located in Centro is Livraria Leonardo da Vinci, Rio’s best bookstore for foreign language titles. The store has a selection of titles in English, Spanish and French.

Rio de Janeiro shopping includes many fine coffee shops, where travelers can purchase some of the world’s finest coffee.
