Whether it’s for business or pleasure, a trip to Rio is an exciting adventure. Once you arrive, your first concern should be transport in Rio de Janeiro. How will you get around? Renting your own car is not recommended, so try taxis, busses, or the metro to take you from place to place. Here’s what you need to know about maneuvering through this extraordinary city.
Traveling through Rio by Taxi
Using a taxi for transport in Rio de Janeiro is the most convenient way to travel. Most cabs are reasonably priced and the majority of drivers speak English. Taxis charge about R$1 per kilometer, plus a minimum charge. Late nights, Sundays, and holidays cost a bit more. Tips are unnecessary, but you may want to allow the driver to keep your change.
The most important thing you need to do is to make sure your cab has a meter. It’s also a good idea to use the taxi stand because they are generally safer and more reliable. If safety is a major concern, consider radio taxis. From the airport, you can take a special red or blue taxi which is paid for by a prepaid voucher.
Traveling through Rio by Bus
Using the bus for transport in Rio saves money, but takes more time. You’ll have to decide what is more important in the particular situation. Bus drivers in Rio have been known to drive a little fast, so hold on tight!
Enter the public bus from the rear, pay your fare, then find a seat. When it’s time to get off the bus, move to the front. The bus destinations are listed on the front over the windshield, and you can ask for help if you have questions. Busses are a little busy during the rush hours, so plan accordingly.
Traveling through Rio by Metro
Transport by metro is clean and inexpensive. It’s also convenient as long as your destination is near the line. Rio de Janeiro currently has two lines, with plans for another one in the near future. You can buy your fare at an automated machine or at a ticket window with helpful clerks. Monday through Saturday, the metro runs from 5:00 am to about midnight. Sunday and holiday hours are different.
Remember that whichever form of transport you take in Rio de Janeiro, ensure your safety by keeping an eye on your wallet and other belongings, traveling in a group, and staying near well-populated areas as much as possible.
